Energy Monitor reporter Dave Keating (left) speaks with Leonardo Moreno, president of Virginia-based AES Clean Energy.

Many power companies are at the COP27 climate summit in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt, to explore new opportunities for moving into clean energy. Leonardo Moreno, president of Virginia-based AES Clean Energy, spoke with Energy Monitor about why he is at the summit and what he has learned.

He has been keen to talk about the geopolitics of the clean energy transition and the future of clean energy, including new resources like green hydrogen. AES is one of only five US power companies aligned with the Paris Agreement’s decarbonisation objectives, and in 2021, AES sold more clean energy to corporations than any other developer globally, according to Bloomberg New Energy Finance. It supplies solar and wind power and energy storage.

“The mission of AES is to accelerate the future of energy together,” Moreno said at COP27. “Together means together with all of our stakeholders, and many of them are present here. They are governments, they are customers, they are suppliers.”
