BioTherm Energy has been selected as preferred bidder for three renewable projects through an open bid process in South Africa totalling 251MW.

Awarded under the fourth round of the Renewable Energy Independent Power Producer Procurement Programme (REIPPPP) by the South African Department of Energy (DOE), the contracts are for two solar photovoltaic (PV) developments and a third wind energy project.

The projects to be set up in the country by the South African utility include the 45MW Aggeneys Solar PV and 86MW Konkoonsies II Solar PV facilities and a 120MW Golden Valley wind power plant.

BioTherm Energy CEO Jasandra Nyker said: "This 251MW allocation by the DOE reflects our ability to compete directly with leading international players who have come to dominate the South African landscape.

We appreciate the DOE’s commitment to supporting a South African development and investment platform in this round."

Renewable energy projects totalling 49MW of capacity were also awarded to the firm in the initial round of the REIPPP. The wind and solar power developments have been successfully built and commissioned by the firm.

The utility is supported by private equity firm Denham Capital.

Denham Capital managing partner and co-president Mackin said: "We strongly believe building low-cost power solutions in countries with a fundamental need for new power generation fuels economic growth."
