Canadian Solar wholly-owned subsidiary Canadian Solar Solutions has selected ABB and its consortium partner Bondfield Construction to develop a 100MW solar photovoltaic (PV) power plant for the Grand Renewable Energy Project in Ontario, Canada.

Under the terms of the $80m contract, ABB will provide various power and automation products including automation platform for conventional power generation and renewable applications, Symphony Plus.

The company will also provide engineering, electrical installation, commissioning and performance testing services. while Bondfield Construction will handle civil and mechanical installation works.

Canadian Solar Solutions serves as an engineering, procurement and construction contractor for the project, which is part of a $5bn investment by Samsung Renewable Energy and partners.

ABB CEO Ulrich Spiesshofer said that the company is delighted to work with Canadian Solar Solutions on the country’s largest solar PV plant and to support Samsung’s visionary renewable energy initiative.

"Our range of solar product and system offerings combined with an extensive track record in efficiently executing optimized utility-scale PV plants around the world will enable us to deliver a best-in-class solution to our customer," Spiesshofer added.

The plant, which is expected to be fully operational by 2015, will generate 165,000MWh of electricity per year enough to power 13,750 Canadian homes.
