From powered roof supports, lifting beams, and drilling systems underground to excavators, loaders, and other mobile machinery in surface operations, hydraulic cylinders provide the force and controlled movement that keep equipment working. When a cylinder is damaged or a seal fails, operations face unplanned maintenance, production disruptions, and potentially added safety risk.
Hydraulic cylinders are often exposed to abrasive dust, mud, water, rock fragments, and chemical exposure. As those rods repeatedly extend and retract, contamination around the exposed surface can be carried towards the sealing area.
Seal Saver, a protective cylinder boot, is designed to address this vulnerability.
“Hydraulic systems deliver exceptional power and precision in mining, but their exposed rods and seals are often the first components to suffer when dirt, water, chemicals, or extreme temperatures enter the equation,” says Leigh Carlson, CEO of Fluid Control Services, the manufacturer of Seal Saver.
This situates cylinder protection as part of a larger reliability challenge of stopping contamination from reaching moving surfaces before it triggers a cycle of wear, seal deterioration, and maintenance needs.
Protecting hydraulic cylinders from contamination
Cylinder damage often develops progressively as dirt abrades a surface, moisture encourages corrosion, or an impact marks a rod. A scored or pitted rod can then compromise the seal as it cycles, increasing the likelihood of contamination and hydraulic-fluid leakage.
Seal Saver is designed to interrupt that process at the exposed part of the cylinder. Its protective boot fits around the rod and cylinder head, expanding and contracting with the cylinder to create an external barrier between moving components and the surrounding environment. Seal Saver offers materials designed to withstand abrasion, water, oil, chemicals and heat, with boots custom-fitted to individual machines and applications. This customisation is key in an industry where hydraulic protection is relevant to a wide range of equipment, from underground mining machines to surface equipment, covering cylinder functions including steering, lifting and material handling.
Lower maintenance pressure and improved equipment availability
When a machine needs a cylinder removed, repaired, or replaced, maintenance costs and lost operating time can be significant. If rods stay cleaner and better protected from scoring, corrosion, and physical damage, seals face less aggressive working conditions, which can extend the cylinder’s service life and reduce interventions associated with contaminated or damaged hydraulic components. Protective covers reduce direct exposure at the rod, where an otherwise healthy hydraulic system can begin to suffer from its operating environment. In mining, that layer of protection can complement wider preventative-maintenance programmes without adding complexity to the machine.
This preventative approach is how Carlson describes the boot’s role: “A protective boot acts as a first line of defence, shielding exposed rods and seals from the contaminants that can lead to scoring, fluid degradation, and eventual system failure,” Carlson says.
The implications go beyond the component lifespan, especially when repairs are needed in challenging locations.
For mine operators, fewer cylinder problems can also support safer maintenance planning. Hydraulic repairs may require machinery to be isolated, dismantled and handled in difficult locations, particularly underground or around large mobile equipment. Preventing avoidable damage reduces the occasions on which teams must carry out this work and helps keep machines available for their intended task.
Seal Saver installation requires no cylinder disassembly and can be done with simple fasteners and a screwdriver. This lets operators add protection in the field without turning a small intervention into a major workshop job.
A simple barrier for demanding mining environments
Mining equipment will always operate around material that is abrasive, wet, corrosive or liable to strike exposed components. Eliminating those conditions is unrealistic, so reliability often depends on stopping them from reaching vulnerable parts of the machine.
By placing a flexible barrier around cylinder rods and seals, Seal Saver provides a comparatively simple way to protect one of mining machinery’s most heavily worked systems.
As Carlson concludes: “Protecting a hydraulic cylinder is not just about preserving a component – it’s about maintaining uptime, productivity, and the profitability of the machine it powers.”
