Energy technology company SLB has been appointed as strategic reservoir partner for the Havstjerne carbon storage project in the Norwegian North Sea.
The company will take on technology and engineering work during the concept and front-end engineering and design (FEED) phases.

Havstjerne is an offshore carbon storage project on the Norwegian Continental Shelf. It is located 135km south-west of Stavanger.
It is operated by Harbour Energy in a consortium with Yinson Production’s subsidiary Stella Maris CCS. The project is intended to store carbon dioxide (CO₂) from industrial emitters across Europe.
The partners plan to transport CO₂ to the licence area by ship.
SLB will coordinate a combined scope of work linking studies of the underground storage reservoir to injection well design, subsea infrastructure and monitoring plans for stored CO₂.
The company will handle the early engineering study, subsurface and reservoir maturation, and wells, while its OneSubsea joint venture (JV) will deliver concept and FEED work on the subsea injection system.
That system covers the template manifold, control system, all-electric trees, umbilical and distribution system.
According to SLB, bundling the work is intended to tighten technical coordination and reduce the number of technical and contractual interfaces.
SLB new energy and industrial business president Gavin Rennick said: “Carbon storage projects are moving from individual technical studies toward integrated development models that connect the subsurface, wells and offshore infrastructure.
“Havstjerne demonstrates how SLB can bring together its technology, engineering and project integration capabilities to help customers develop the technical basis needed to advance large-scale carbon storage projects.”
The studies will feed into the technical, cost and schedule basis that the consortium needs before a final investment decision (FID) is taken.
Havstjerne project manager Mark van Aerssen said: “Havstjerne is being matured to provide a cost-effective, large-scale offshore CO₂ storage for European industrial emitters. This integrated approach will help us further define the project’s technical, cost and schedule basis while strengthening coordination across critical interfaces.”
An appraisal well drilled in 2025 confirmed reservoir quality suitable for CO₂ injection and storage.
The project also received $262m (€225m) from the EU Innovation Fund in 2025, and has selected a low-pressure floating storage and injection concept.
Last month, SLB Capturi, a JV between SLB and Aker Carbon Capture, was selected by Uniper as its preferred carbon capture technology licensor for the planned Connah’s Quay Low Carbon Power scheme at Deeside in the UK.
