Ørsted has announced plans for a new offshore wind project, Dadu 2, in Taiwan with a planned capacity of up to 2GW.

This project will occupy an area of approximately 234.6km² in the Taiwan Strait, with the closest point situated around 38km off the coast of Changhua County.

The Danish renewable energy developer is proposing to use turbines with individual capacities ranging between 14MW and 22MW.

The specific number and final configuration of turbines have not yet been determined, but initial plans outline the potential for between 91 and 143 turbines, with jacket foundations under consideration, reNEWS reported.

As outlined in a report cited by TGS, export cables are expected to reach land north of the designated Changhua offshore wind cable corridor managed by the Taiwan Power Company.

Power generated from Dadu 2 is due to be routed through an onshore substation, prior to connecting to either existing or future grid facilities operated by the Taiwan Power Company.

The proposal for Dadu 2 is progressing as part of Taiwan’s policy to increase the share of green energy in the national power mix.

The project has now entered the environmental assessment process, which includes a public consultation stage.

A public meeting regarding the development was held on 13 August in Changhua County as part of the ongoing review, reported offshoreWIND.biz.

Ørsted is also pursuing another offshore wind farm in the region, known as Dadu I.

The Ministry of Environment’s database lists Dadu I as having a potential installed capacity of up to 924MW.

The Environmental Impact Statement for Dadu I has recently been completed, according to information available on the ministry’s website.

Further details, including the timeline for construction and final turbine selection for Dadu 2, are expected to be determined as the permitting and consultation process continues.

Earlier this month, the Old 300 Storage battery facility developed by Ørsted in Needville, Texas, US, started commercial operations and is now fully integrated into the Electric Reliability Council of Texas grid.
