Samsung Renewable Energy has started commercial operations at 149MW Grand Renewable Wind facility in co-ordination with and Pattern Energy Group in Ontario, Canada.
Six Nations of the Grand River has assisted in development of the facility, which is located in Haldimand County.
Equipped with 67 of Siemens 2.3MW turbines, the facility will generate electricity to meet power requirement for around 50,000 Ontario households.
The facility will be linked with Hydro One Networks’ N5N 230 kV transmission line, Pattern Energy informed.
Samsung C&T Canada was the construction contractor for the facility.
Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator (IESO) will buy renewable power generated from the facility according to a 20-year power purchase agreement.
Ontario Minister of Energy Bob Chiarelli said: "Wind provides clean, emission-free electricity for Ontarians while creating thousands of jobs and economic opportunities.
"Collaborative projects like this one will help wind reach 15 per cent of the province’s installed capacity by 2025."
Pattern Energy CEO Mike Garland said: "The commissioning of the Grand Renewable Wind facility by the end of 2014 brings our number of Ontario facilities to two in operation, two in construction and two in late stage development, totaling 1,269 megawatts to be installed in the province by 2018."
