Electric utility company Iberdrola has restored and modernised 45 of its 92 small hydro power stations in Spain, with an investment of €10m over the last three years.
The company has equipped its oldest plants with advanced technology in order to boost output and extend their lifespan.

This project included the electromechanical reengineering of turbines and alternators, which is a crucial aspect of hydro power plants, and civil works to upgrade canals and weirs and the replacement of control systems.
Further, environmental and safety measures were conducted such as raising fish ladders at weirs and fences along canals.
About 60 Iberdrola employees were assigned to the project, which benefitted numerous local suppliers and contractors due to the construction works.
Iberdrola, at the end of the first half of 2014, operated small hydro power plants in Spain with a combined installed capacity of 306 MW.
