The expansion aims to increase Mitsubishi Power’s manufacturing capacity for steam turbines, gas turbines, and other power generation equipment that serve customers throughout the Americas.
The announcement took place as Mitsubishi Power Americas signed an expansion framework agreement with the Savannah Economic Development Authority.
Representatives from the Georgia Department of Economic Development, elected officials, and community leaders were present at the event.
The project is backed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
Savannah Machinery Works vice president Brandon Bodie said: “Savannah has been a critical hub for Mitsubishi Power since 2010, and we are excited to deepen our commitment to the local community with the expansion of Savannah Machinery Works.
“With this expansion, we are investing in our facilities and in our workforce, manufacturing capabilities, and a more resilient supply chain to deliver critical power generation equipment and services to our customers, all while supporting economic growth here in Savannah.”
The expansion will bolster the facility’s machining capacity, introduce additional advanced manufacturing technologies, and improve material flow and production infrastructure.
Mitsubishi Power expects the investment to open up further opportunities in manufacturing, logistics, engineering, quality, maintenance, and support roles.
Savannah Machinery Works began operations in 2010 after Mitsubishi Power Americas built its first complete gas turbine manufacturing facility outside Japan.
The 430,000ft² site shipped its first US-produced gas turbine from Savannah in 2012, and in June 2023 celebrated the manufacture and delivery of its 50th advanced-class gas turbine.
Mitsubishi Power said the Savannah site’s location at the intersection of I-95 and I-16 provides port and rail access, making it a strategic manufacturing and shipping hub.
The expansion forms part of Mitsubishi Power’s broader investment strategy across the Americas. This strategy includes recent growth in Florida at the Orlando Power Generation Services Headquarters and a planned new corporate headquarters in Lake Mary scheduled to open in November. The company also plans additional expansions through 2028.
Mitsubishi Power Americas president and CEO Bill Newsom said: “This expansion strengthens American manufacturing and gives our people the advanced capabilities they need as they continue to deliver for our customers and help electricity growth across the Americas for decades to come.”
