A consortium led by Switzerland-based Kanadevia Inova has formalised concession and off-take agreements with the Municipality of Casablanca in Morocco and Moroccan energy bodies for a large-scale waste-to-energy (WtE) project, reportedly valued at $1.5bn.
The agreements include a 33.5-year concession for the Casablanca Solid Waste Treatment and Valorisation Project and electricity off-take deals with SRM Casablanca-Settat and the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE).

Construction of the facility is slated to begin in Q4 2026, with full operations expected by mid-2030, reported Reuters.
The project will be developed by Kanadevia Inova, alongside Moroccan investor Nareva and partner Itochu. It is intended to transform municipal waste management in Greater Casablanca, which is home to over 4.2 million people.
Under the terms of the concession, the facility will treat around 1.5 million tonnes of municipal waste annually.
The Casablanca Solid Waste Treatment and Valorisation Project aims to increase waste valorisation rates to approximately 80%, reducing the proportion of waste sent to landfill.
The completed facility will have a generation capacity of roughly 126MWe from the WtE plant, supplemented by 50MWp of solar photovoltaics and 4MW from landfill biogas recovery.
This combined output is expected to produce about 1TWh of electricity each year, meeting the power needs of nearly one million residents.
Kanadevia Inova will be responsible for engineering, procurement, construction, operational support, long-term maintenance and financing for the project.
The new plant, to be built adjacent to the Mediouna Landfill, is expected to contribute to greenhouse gas reduction by diverting waste from landfill and generating energy.
It is expected to comply with EU Industrial Emissions Directive and Best Available Techniques standards and has been designed with future carbon capture integration in mind.
The project is expected to create around 140 skilled operational jobs, in addition to approximately 1,240 jobs during its three-and-a-half-year construction period and 300 more for supporting infrastructure.

Itochu, investing through its UK subsidiary I-Environment Investments, confirmed its participation in the project.
According to Itochu, the project is expected to avoid up to 128 million tonnes of CO₂ emissions over the term of the concession.
The Casablanca Solid Waste Treatment and Valorisation Project also includes closure and management of the existing Mediouna landfill, new landfill construction, a biogas power plant, and a solar power plant using surplus land.
The facility will represent Morocco’s first integrated WtE infrastructure, combining several methods of renewable energy generation alongside advanced waste management.
