Australian green energy and metals producer Fortescue has announced plans to establish a major green hydrogen hub in Prince George, Canada.

The project is led by Dr Andrew Forrest, chairman of Fortescue, who spoke about the proposed facility during a presentation at the House of Ancestors on 13 September, according to North Shore News.

British Columbia is the province with the third-largest gross domestic product in Canada and a growing hydrogen energy sector. According to the Trade and Invest British Columbia website, the region boasts more than half (51%) of the country’s hydrogen and fuel cell companies and plans to become “a world-leading hydrogen economy” by 2050.

The green hydrogen plant proposed by Fortescue will be situated at the Willow Cale Industrial Park, minutes from downtown Prince George.

Prince George is a city in British Columbia, Canada, with a population of more than 72,000. Forrest chose Prince George because of the town’s leadership and access to natural resources.

“[Prince George has] got clean air. It’s got heaps of water. It’s got heaps of electricity. It’s got everything going for it, and so this first 1,000MW facility sounds really big, but it’s a stepping stone to what could be built out here in this beautiful part of the world,” said Forrest.
