Shareholders of the Waltrop Battery Park in Germany, have agreed to move forward with the next phase of construction, including the development of a substation and other major infrastructure.
The approval was given last week by the project’s backers, German asset manager Luxcara, Swiss energy company BKW, and a group of municipal utilities coordinated by Trianel through T-BESS 1.

The battery energy storage system (BESS) project is being developed in Waltrop, North Rhine-Westphalia.
Once completed, it is expected to provide 900MW of power and a minimum of 1.8GWh of storage capacity. These figures would make the Waltrop Battery Park one of the largest utility-scale battery projects in Germany and Europe.
According to the companies, the storage systems for the battery park will be supplied by each shareholder independently, with Luxcara providing 520MW, BKW contributing 300MW and T-BESS 1 delivering 80MW.
Construction activity on site has already started with preparatory works, while the main building phase is scheduled to start in autumn 2026. The facility is currently set for commissioning in 2028.
The project reached a critical milestone in May when the final permits for the substation and the BESS were granted.
In addition, the Bundesnetzagentur, Germany’s Federal Network Agency, confirmed that advanced-stage storage projects such as this would continue to benefit from exemption from network charges.
The consortium said this decision represents a key factor for the economic viability of the scheme.
Luxcara managing partner Philip Sander said: “We invest in infrastructure that enables the next stage of the energy transition.

“These are exactly the conditions required to successfully bring ambitious storage projects onto the grid and into operation.”
The project partners report that major equipment packages have already been ordered.
