American-Irish power management company Eaton will invest $150m to increase the supply of circuit breakers, switchboards, panelboards and other power distribution tools for its North American customers. Around $80m will go into expanding the company’s manufacturing footprint in El Paso, Texas.

By investing in El Paso, Eaton intends to create more than 600 skilled manufacturing jobs. The investment involves opening a new facility and increasing production capacity at its existing manufacturing plant.

In addition, the company will expand production capacity at existing facilities in Pennsylvania, as well as outside the US, in Mexico, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic.

“Eaton solutions are at the heart of electrical systems everywhere and are vital to accelerate complex infrastructure projects for buildings, healthcare facilities, data centres, industrial facilities and utilities,” said Mike Yelton, president of the Americas region, electrical sector, at Eaton. “The latest investment in regional manufacturing reflects our commitment to respond rapidly to unprecedented customer demand and the tremendous abilities of our long-time employees and channel partners.”

With a population of around 680,000, El Paso has a diverse economy with multiple business sectors including trade, oil and gas, healthcare, call centres, agriculture and tourism thriving at the border with Mexico.

Eaton is not the only company with large investment plans in El Paso. News of its expansion comes shortly after Schneider Electric – another energy management and automation company – promised to open a new factory in El Paso in a bid to expand production of low-voltage switchboards and create 400 jobs in the region.
