Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, a Denmark-based investment firm specialising in infrastructure investments, in collaboration with Copenhagen Offshore Partners, a Denmark-based company, plans to invest $1.3bn (€1.18bn) to open a new 500MW offshore wind farm at the Bay of Bengal in Bangladesh. This will be the first offshore wind farm to ever be built in Bangladesh.

According to the Daily Star of Bangladesh, the proposal is in accordance with the Mujib Climate Prosperity Plan and the two Danish companies have proposed that Summit Group, which is a South Asian infrastructure specialist as well as an independent power producer in Bangladesh, joins the consortium.

Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners was founded in 2012 and is now the world’s largest dedicated fund manager within greenfield renewable energy investments. It is also a global leader in offshore wind, with international offices in Hamburg, London, Melbourne, New York, Seoul, Singapore, Tokyo and Utrecht.

Copenhagen Offshore Partners describes itself as a leader in “offshore wind project origination, development and construction in new and established markets around the world”.

Bangladesh remains heavily dependent on fossil fuels in its energy mix, and according to IQAir, capital city Dhaka is the 28th most polluted city in the world.
