ABB, a Swedish-Swiss technology company mostly working in robotics, power, heavy electrical equipment and automation technology, plans to build a new 1,114m² calibration hall in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, US.

The new hall will be built on the factory site as part of ABB’s expansion of North American instrumentation manufacturing in Bartlesville. The expansion will enable ABB to move the production of its pressure, temperature and level transmitters, as well as positioners, flow meters, pneumatic actuators and some continuous gas analysers, to Bartlesville.

Amina Hamidi, managing director of ABB Measurement & Analytics, Business Line Instrumentation, said: “By consolidating the production of several instrumentation product lines in a single, world-class North American facility, ABB can serve its local customers better and strengthen its instrumentation offering to the local market.”

News of the Oklahoma expansion came after, in April this year, ABB promised to accelerate its growth strategy in the US, with authorities expecting the company to invest approximately $170m across its electrification and automation businesses.

In September, ABB said it would invest $280m in a new robotics hub in Västerås, Sweden, in a move designed to bolster production capacity by 50% in the region and meet automation and product expectations from its European customers.

Located 76km north of Tulsa, Bartlesville had a population of around 37,000 people in 2021. According to Data USA, the city’s main industry sectors are retail trade, health care and social assistance, and manufacturing. Oklahoma, a state in the south-west of the US, managed to attract four FDI projects in 2020, down from ten in 2019 due to the growing economic impact of the Covid pandemic.
