Saipem has selected Alfa Laval to provide heat transfer technology for a Bioenergy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS) facility being developed by Stockholm Exergi in Sweden.
The initiative aims to capture, liquefy and permanently store up to 800,000 tonnes per annum of carbon dioxide (CO₂), making it one of Europe’s largest bioenergy carbon capture projects.

The facility is scheduled to commence operations in 2028.
Located at the Värtaverket biomass-fuelled combined heat and power station in Stockholm, the BECCS plant will capture CO₂ generated from biogenic fuel combustion.
The initiative will contribute to Sweden’s climate neutrality ambitions and is aligned with the EU’s climate strategy.
When complete, the project is expected to account for around 1–2% of current global carbon capture capacity.
Alfa Laval will supply its Ziepack gas-gas interchanger and several plate-and-frame heat exchangers.
The equipment is intended to maximise system efficiency and heat recovery, playing a key role in the facility’s core capture process.
Saipem is handling the detailed engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the BECCS facility’s carbon capture, CO₂ storage and ship-loading systems.
Alfa Laval energy division president Thomas Møller said: “Carbon capture at this scale is one of the most demanding thermal engineering challenges in the energy transition and effective energy recovery is what ultimately makes it commercially viable.

The BECCS facility, once operational, will capture CO₂ from the Värtaverket site and transport it for long-term storage at the Northern Lights site via ship. This approach will deliver negative emissions, with estimated absolute greenhouse gas emission removal of 7.83 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent within the first decade of operation.
Financing for the project comes from several sources including the Swedish Energy Agency’s reverse auction, which will provide just over $2bn (Skr20bn) in support for up to 15 years, and $207.61m (€180m) in funding from the EU Innovation Fund.
Stockholm Exergi also expects to generate revenue from the sale of carbon removal certificates on the voluntary carbon market.
The site covers a footprint of approximately 15,500m² and includes a five-storey building to house the facility.
Stockholm Exergi BECCS director Egil Nybakk said: “The plant will require a lot of energy to capture the CO₂ from the flue gas and liquify it, but with the high-quality Ziepack heat exchangers from Alfa Laval, we will be able to reclaim the energy used.
“This energy will go back in our existing district heating system, which contributes additionally to our carbon removal targets.”
