Description

Ringhals 3 is a Generation II nuclear reactor developed by Stal-Laval Turbin and Westinghouse Electric Sweden, are the main contractors for the project.

The 1,117MW reactor is operated by Ringhals. Vattenfall and Sydkraft Nuclear Power are currently owning the project having ownership stake of 70.44% and 29.56% respectively.

The PWR reactor generates 6,623.06GWh/annum of electricity. It features 157 fuel assemblies in the core of reactor, the place where fission occurs and energy is released. Safety contol rods that are used to control the fission rate in the reactor are 24 in number.

Development status

The reactor construction commenced in Sep, 1972 and subsequently entered into commercial operation in Sep, 1981.

Contractors involved

GE Power was selected as the steam turbine supplier for the nuclear reactor. The company provided 2 steam turbines for the project. Swedish State Electricity Board was selected as an architect engineer for the reactor. The reactor system was supplied by Westinghouse Electric Sweden. The reactor vessel has been supplied by Framatome. The material used for the construction of the vessel is Alloyed Steel (SA 508 Cl 2). The civil works were carried out by Swedish State Electricity Board.
