Notably, the number of energy transition-related patent applications in the power industry was 12,205 in Q4 2023, versus 36,804 in the prior quarter.
The top five companies accounted for 13% of patenting activity
Analysis of patenting activity by companies shows that Contemporary Amperex Technology filed the most energy transition patents within the power industry in Q4 2023. The company filed 689 energy transition-related patents in the quarter, compared with 1092 in the previous quarter. It was followed by Samsung SDI with 284 energy transition patent filings, State Grid Corporation of China (232 filings), and Siemens (216 filings) in Q4 2023.
Patenting activity was driven by China with a 58% share of total patent filings
The largest share of energy transition related patent filings in the power industry in Q4 2023 was in China with 58%, followed by the US (18%) and Japan (9%). The share represented by China was 16% lower than the 75% share it accounted for in Q3 2023.
