The facility is intended to strengthen the California power grid by delivering storage capacity equivalent to powering more than 22,000 homes in the state.

EDPR NA CEO Sandhya Ganapathy said: “Sandrini Energy Storage represents an important investment in California’s energy future. Projects like Sandrini strengthen grid resilience, support economic growth and help build a more affordable, dependable energy framework for California.

“We are grateful to work hand in hand with our communities and Redwood Coast Energy Authority to bring Sandrini online.”

The Sandrini Energy Storage site is co-located with the 300MW Sandrini Solar energy project.

RCEA has an agreement to purchase 100MW from the solar site and holds an energy storage service agreement for the full capacity of the BESS.

RCEA executive director Beth Burks said: “The addition of the Sandrini Energy Storage project to our portfolio supports RCEA’s goals of building new, clean capacity that matches our customers’ energy needs and enhances the generation delivered by Sandrini Solar, while also supporting grid reliability.”

Construction of the BESS supported approximately 50 jobs, while combined construction for Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage accounted for around 250 jobs. It is projected to bring in more than $25m in local tax revenue.

EDPR NA operates around 1.23GW of renewable energy capacity across California.

The company reports an economic impact of roughly $154m statewide, including more than $41m for local governments, in excess of $33m paid to landowners and the creation of more than 1,090 construction jobs.

The company’s portfolio in California includes sites such as Lone Valley Solar, Rising Tree Wind, Windhub A Solar, Sandrini Solar and Energy Storage, and Scarlet Solar Energy and Energy Storage.
