IKEA has announced plans to install 34,000 photovoltaic (PV) solar panels on two of its distribution centres in US to generate 4.92MW of clean energy.
The two distribution Centres located in Perryville, Maryland and Westampton, New Jersey, will produce an annual output of 5,933,200kWh of electricity which is equivalent to reducing 4,509 tons of carbon dioxide or providing electricity for 510 homes yearly.
IKEA US president Mike Ward said the company is increasing its US solar presence further with solar energy systems atop these two east coast distribution centers.
"With only 44 locations nationwide, we try to contribute whenever and wherever possible to creating a better everyday life for the many," Ward added.
"These plans for installing solar panels on the roofs of two additional distribution centers demonstrate that our sustainable commitment extends beyond just stores, into all facets of the retail operations."

By GlobalDataOver 18,535 Solar panels on the distribution centre located in the Perryville, Maryland will generate 2.66MW clean energy while the Westampton, New Jersey distribution centre will use 15,609 panels to generate 2.24MW of clean energy.
IKEA will own and operate each of its solar PV energy systems as opposed to a solar lease or power purchase agreement.
The company contracted Inovateus Solar, a solar power distributor and integrator, to provide the panels.
IKEA already has 17 solar energy systems operational and 20 underway and installing panels on these two distribution centres will increase the company’s solar presence to nearly 89%.
It will have a total generating capacity of 38MW in the US.
