The first phase of the 579 MW Solar Star development project has successfully synchronised and commenced generating first power to California ISO grid.

The Solar Star development projects comprise two co-located projects in Kern and Los Angeles counties in California.

Owned by MidAmerican Solar, the projects are designed and being constructed by SunPower, which will also provide operations and maintenance services.

The projects currently employ about 600 workers at the site.

Work on the the 579-megawatt Solar Star projects commenced in early 2013 and is scheduled to be completed by 2015-end.

On completion, it will have more than 1.7 million panels installed and would cater to about 255,000 households, according to MidAmerican Solar.

MidAmerican Solar Solar Star projects community relations specialist Paulette Rush said, "The Solar Star projects are creating needed jobs and providing economic opportunities in the Rosamond, Lancaster and Palmdale communities and surrounding areas."

Southern California Edison Power Supply senior vice president Stuart Hemphill said utility-scale solar power is a competitively priced renewable resource, and a key part of Southern California Edison’s energy mix.

"These Solar Star projects will help us continue to grow our renewable portfolio on behalf of our customers," Hemphill added.
