North Midland Construction (NMC) has received a £9.5m to build the new 38MW Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant in Lincolnshire, UK.

The contract will be delivered for Burmeister & Wain Scandinavian Contractor, which is the main contractor on the Sleaford project.

Burmeister & Wain is working for Eco2, which is the developer of the project.

Sleaford Renewable Energy Plant project director Andrew Toft said, "The Sleaford plant is now centre stage as an exemplar of the green economic progress in the UK and part of the country’s vision for sustainable energy."

NMC will be responsible for construction of the civil and building works at the site which will include 0.75 acre straw barns, a wood chip import facility, combined turbine and boiler halls plus administration buildings.

The straw-fired combined heat and power (CHP) will generate enough electricity to provide power and heat for around 65,000 homes and will offset 250,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.

Eco2 will recycle ash from the plant to use as fertiliser on farmland

The plant is slated to be operational by 2014.
