Aiea High School Principal Michael Tokioka said Hawaii Pacific Solar has done more than just provide a PV system for the school.

“They have given us curriculum materials on solar energy, a sun safety program and a flat screen monitor that allows student to do real-time monitoring to the see the amount of power being generated and the amount of carbon reduction and energy saving as a result of the solar panels,” added Tokioka.

Hawaii Pacific Solar president and CEO Bob Johnston said, “Aiea High School’s staff and students have really embraced energy conservation and other sustainability efforts, and it’s a distinct pleasure to be working with them.”

The Aiea High School is estimated to save over $500,000 on its electric charges in the 20-year life of the photovoltaic solar system.

Under a power purchase agreement (PPA), the State Department of Education (DOE) had awarded a contract to HPS to install solar energy systems at Aiea, Kahuku, Kaimuki and Waianae high schools.

HPS and DOE selected RC Energy for the funding of the project and Conergy for the modules used for the project which is expected to generate around 174,000 kWh of electricity every year.

The system is owned, operated and maintained by RC Energy, under the terms of the PPA between Conergy and RC Energy; RC Energy will construct and be in charge of the performance of the project.

The other projects of the DOE will be completed in the next 12 months.
