Gehrlicher Solar has begun the construction of a 15.2MW Rothenburg IV solar park situated on the premises of the former military airport at Rothenburg in Saxony.

The Rothenburg IV solar project is estimated to produce approximately 15 million kilowatt hours of annual green electricity which is expected to be sufficient to meet the power needs of about 4,280 households with three members.

The company is currently fixing the steel profiles on the ground on which substructure GehrTec Base will be installed for the solar modules.

Gehrlicher Solar will build up to 25ha of the area with substructures and 7.6MW solar modules from Yingli and BYD.

The company will also use 16 inverters from SMA to convert the power produced from the solar park directly into grid-conforming alternating current.

Gehrlicher Solar CEO Klaus Gehrlicher said the project was supported by the political representatives of the city of Rothenburg and the administrative district of Görlitz, and the special purpose association of the airport.

"However, all involved partners like airport operator, city, administrative district and local associations can profit from the construction of solar park Rothenburg – above all companies from the region which are used with priority as subcontractors for the construction of the solar park," Gehrlicher said.

Gehrlicher Solar is developing the project for KGAL.

KGAL board member Klaus Wolf said, "With the project in Rothenburg we continue the good and trustful cooperation with Gehrlicher Solar AG."

The commissioning of the solar park is scheduled for 30 September 2012.

The new Rothenburg IV solar park complements the three existing Rothenburg I-III solar parks.
