US based First Wind has started constructing its 105MW wind project in Palouse Wind in northern Whitman County, Washington.

The $210m Palouse Wind project will install 58 Vestas V100-1.8 MW turbines between State Route 195 and the town of Oakesdale, and produce enough clean energy to power 30,000 homes.

First Wind CEO Paul Gaynor said, “In addition to representing a major source of clean energy for years to come, we are also making a major investment in the economic future of the region with $30 million of direct spending planned during construction and an additional $1.5 million each year once the project achieves commercial operations.”

RMT, a general contractor on the project is hiring many subcontractors and Pacific Northwest-based businesses to work on construction of the wind project.

Avista will purchase the generated energy from the wind farm, and through a direct interconnect it will take the delivery to its Avista 230kV Benewah-to-Shawnee transmission line.

Avista chairman, president and chief executive officer Scott Morris said the power from Palouse Wind will be part of a diverse, responsible energy portfolio that includes renewable resources generated right here in our community.

“Palouse Wind will help Avista meet its goal of providing reliable energy to our customers at a reasonable cost, while meeting renewable portfolio standards,” added Morris.

The wind project construction is expected to be completed in the final quarter this year, and will be online and operational by the end of the year.
