The new Alamosa Solar Generating plant is located on a 225 acre site in the San Luis Valley.

Cogentrix president Tom Bonner said the company has a long history of developing, constructing and operating power plants employing a variety of technologies.

"We’re proud of the Alamosa Solar project and we are excited for what it means to Colorado, Xcel Energy and the US solar sector," said Bonner.

The solar project uses over 500 dual-axis, pedestal mounted tracker assemblies, each producing almost 60kW of renewable electricity from the sun.

Each tracker assembly is 50 feet high and 70 feet wide, and every tracker contains 7,560 Fresnel lenses which are utilised to concentrate sunlight on the solar cells.

Clean energy generated by the plant will supplied to the Xcel Energy’s subsidiary, Public Service Company of Colorado (PSCo).

The project was constructed by US based construction company M.A. Mortenson.
