A consortium led by Babcock & Wilcox Vølund has been awarded more than $220m worth of contracts for a biomass power project in the UK.

Under the deal, the Denmark based subsidiary of US based power firm Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) will construct the waste wood fuelled facility in Rotherham, South Yorkshire.

B&W Vølund and its consortium partner Interserve Strategic Projects will be responsible for the design, manufacturing and operations of the facility.

Owned by Copenhagen Infrastructure Partners, the renewable facility is expected to generate 40MW of energy, when operational.

This is the fourth major renewable project won by the B&W within the last seven months.

B&W Global Power Division senior vice-president and general manager Paul Scavuzzo said: "The market for biomass power and waste-to-energy technologies in Europe continues to be strong, and B&W is well-positioned to meet the demand for reliable, clean energy solutions."

The biomass power facility will house one B&W Vølund-designed multi-fuel boiler with a DynaGrate fuel combustion system, a dry flue gas desulfurization system (dry FGD).

The partners are expected to complete the construction of the facility within the third quarter of 2017.

Under the terms of the contract, the Danish power unit will also deal with the operation and maintenance of the power plant for the initial 15 years after it is commissioned.
