This collaboration leverages Nanometrics’ instrumentation and experience providing turnkey services in the fields of oil & gas, mining, geothermal, critical infrastructure and CCS, combined with KUM’s decades of leadership in offshore engineering and deployment of ocean bottom sensing technologies. By combining their strengths, Nanometrics and KUM provide scalable, proven and reliable passive seismic monitoring solutions throughout the lifecycle of offshore projects, including critical CCS initiatives like the Greensand Future project in the Danish North Sea.
Data will be processed through Nanometrics’ advanced 24/7 data center, using the Nanometrics 8th Generation AI Analyst algorithms, ensuring accurate and complete high-resolution data in near real-time, a capability trusted by industry customers and regulators worldwide.
“This partnership with KUM marks a significant step forward for the offshore energy and CCS industries,” said Dario Baturan, Vice President and General Manager, Seismic Monitoring Services, Nanometrics. “By combining our expertise, we are delivering a comprehensive, turnkey solution that provides the critical data and actionable insights our customers need to operate safely, efficiently, responsibly and in full regulatory compliance.”
Onno Bliss, Chief Executive Officer, KUM added, “Combining our offshore deployment capabilities with Nanometrics’ leading seismic technology and data processing expertise creates a powerful synergy. Together, we will provide scalable and reliable monitoring solutions that address the unique challenges of offshore environments.”
Customers will benefit from the support of a dedicated team of experts from both Nanometrics and KUM throughout their project lifecycle, from initial planning and deployment to data analysis and interpretation.
The partnership will immediately support the INEOS-led Greensand Future project, where Nanometrics will provide advanced data processing for the baseline seismicity surveys conducted by KUM’s NAMMU ocean bottom deployment vehicles utilizing Nanometrics’ best in class seismometers.
Project Greensand Future aims to establish the EU’s first full-scale carbon capture and storage value chain, with the goal of safely and permanently storing up to 8 million tonnes of CO2 per year by 2030. This ambitious project requires meticulous monitoring of the subsurface environment to ensure the safe and effective storage of CO2.
Recognizing the critical need for high-quality seismic data, INEOS Energy DK selected KUM to deploy and operate their advanced NAMMU ocean bottom systems (OBS) for pre-injection baseline seismicity surveys. Under the terms of the new partnership, Nanometrics will contribute its industry-leading expertise in seismic data processing and analysis to this vital endeavor.
The Greensand Future project is a crucial step towards achieving the EU’s climate goals, demonstrating the feasibility of large-scale CCS and paving the way for a more sustainable future. With storage operations expected to commence in late 2025 or early 2026, this collaboration between Nanometrics and KUM will play a vital role in ensuring its long-term success.
Under the terms of the new partnership, Nanometrics and KUM turnkey offering will be able to be used by projects around the world including Asia, Australia, South America and North America to provide comprehensive monitoring for CCS and other offshore operations.
