Welspun Renewables has commissioned 32MW solar power plant at Bathinda, in the Indian state of Punjab.

Claimed to be the largest plant in the state Eemerged as the solar hub of South East Asia, it was inaugurated by Union Food Processing Minister Harsimrat Badal, andPunjab New and Renewable Energy Minister Bikram Singh Majithia.

At the inaugural ceremony, Majithia said, "We are committed to developing Punjab as a fully sustainable state. Ensuring the state’s upward development trend is important and therefore energy security is critical.

"We have opted to take an aggressive step by turning to solar energy for fueling energy needs of our industries and farmers.

"Through projects like these we are WELSPUN RENEWABLES ensuring that our immediate future as well as that of our coming generations will be more secure and avert an otherwise polluted future."

It has been set up on 140 acres of land and will feed 48 million units of clean power annually into the state grid over the the next 25 years. The plant will also reduce approximately 1,331,525t of CO2 emissions during this period.

Welspun Renewables vice chairman Vineet Mittal said : "This project is a testament of our commitment to renewable energy. Our engineering expertise will ensure optimum generation from this project. While powering the state’s industries, we will also be working with our neighboring communities towards sustainable living."

Besides, it has signed an MoU for setting up a 151 MW solar capacity in the state.

In the next few years, the company will set up 5GW capacities, and of this 1 GW will be commissioned in fiscal 2015-16.

The company has a track of establishing 11,001MW of renewable capacities across the country.
