Norwegian firm Statkraft has opened its new Cheves 172MW hydropower plant, which is located 130km north of the capitol Lima. It is the first South American greenfield plant developed and constructed by Statkraft.
It is capable of generating around 840GWh power annually based on water from the Andes.

It will be sold through long-term power purchase agreements with eight distribution companies.
The investments in Peru are a part of company’s growing focus in South America.
The firm is into development, operation and maintenance of wind and hydro power assets in Brazil, Chile and Peru.
The company owns interests in 20 hydropower plants and two wind farms with extensive power trading and employs more than 700 people in these countries.

It also underlines our ambition to further strengthen our position as a leading international provider of pure energy. Our efforts in South-America play a very important role in this strategy."
Statkraft has been present in Peru since 2003 and now owns nine hydropower plants in the country with an annual power production of about 2,500GWh.
