NextEra Energy Resources, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy, is planning to build and operate around 17MW of solar facilities in three different military installations in Oahu, Hawaii, US.

As part of the plan, a subsidiary of NextEra Energy Resources will construct one ground-mounted fixed-tilt solar system, three carport solar systems and ten rooftop solar systems.

The entire project will include around 71,000 Sharp solar modules.

Site preparation is currently underway and the company will begin construction of the solar system in February next year and expects to complete by that year end.

Under a 25-year power purchase deal, the US Navy will buy the entire production to be produced at the site.

In October, a NextEra Energy Resources subsidiary bought the membership interest in an energy development company Pacific Energy Solutions (PES).

PES was selected by the Naval Facilities Engineering Command (NAVFAC) in 2011 to develop solar power facilities by using specified sites on military installations in Hawai and directly sell power to the military.

Last July, NAVFAC and PES signed a deal to generate around 17MW of solar photovoltaic power.

TriLateral Energy and ECC Energy Solutions were originally involved in the PES project and now only ECC has decided to be with the project and continue managing its construction through completion and start-up.

NextEra Energy Resources president and CEO Armando Pimentel said: "The Department of Defense and the US Navy have set aggressive goals for the use of renewable energy sources at their installations across the nation, and we’re pleased to be able to help them achieve their goals.

"This renewable energy project further illustrates our commitment to renewable energy, the Department of Defense and the state of Hawaii."

In May, NextEra started construction on two distributed generation solar photovoltaic (PV) systems in Oneida County, New York.

The systems will have the capacity to produce 5.2MW DC of solar power.
