MHI Vestas Offshore Wind, a joint venture (JV) between Vestas and Japan’s Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has been selected to provide turbines to 370MW Norther wind farm in the Belgian North Sea, around 22km off the coast of Zeebrugge.

Under the deal, MHI Vestas will provide around 46 of its V164-8.0 MW turbines, reports Reuters.

Cliamed to be the biggest wind power plant in Belgium, the Norther project is scheduled to be commissioned in 2019.

The Norther project is owned by Norther, along with two other companies including Eneco and Elicio.

MHI Vestas Offshore Wind CEO Jens Tommerup said: “MHI Vestas has a strong partnership with Eneco, who we have worked with to deliver the 129MW Eneco Luchterduinen and 120MW Princess Amalia projects in the Netherlands, while we look forward to building our relationship with Elicio N.V. going forwards.

“Being selected as the preferred supplier for the Norther project underlines the customers’ confidence in the V164-8.0 MW and of MHI Vestas, and represents a big step forwards in our partnership.”

Once completed, the Norther facility will be able to supply power to 370,000 Belgian households and help the country to meet its goal to produce 13% of its energy from renewable sources by 2020.

Last December, MHI Vestas received an order to provide 40 V164-8.0 MW wind turbines to DONG Energy’s 330MW Walney Extension West project in the UK.

Blades for the project will be manufactured at the company’s facility located on the Isle of Wight in England, UK.
