The Cameron wind farm will feature 55 Acciona Windpower AW125/3000 turbines and it is expected to become operational in late 2015.

When operational, the wind farm will generate clean energy that will be enough to power around 59,000 homes in the US annually.

The financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. However, it is said to be IKEA’s biggest renewable energy investment to date.

Cameron is the second wind facility IKEA has acquired in the US following the 98MW Hoopeston project in Illinois.

Together, the two wind farms are estimated to produce about 1,000 gigawatt hours of electricity per year, enough to serve about 90,000 households in America.

IKEA US acting president and CFO Rob Olson said: "IKEA believes that the climate challenge requires bold commitment and action.

"We invest in renewable energy to become more sustainable as a business and also because it makes good business sense."

IKEA is planning to generate 100% of its energy from renewable energy source by 2020.

The company has acquired, or agreed to buy 279 turbines in nine countries, and plans to invest $1.9bn in wind and solar projects by the end of 2015.

IKEA has 165,000 solar panels installed on 90% of its buildings in the US, with 38MW of capacity.
