Spanish wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa has won a turnkey deal for the Gulf of El Zayt wind project in Egypt, which is being financed by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
Gamesa has been awarded the international tender for the renewable energy development by the Egyptian New & Renewable Energy Authority (NREA).
According to the terms of the deal, the Spanish firm will deliver, install and commission 110 of its G80-2.0 MW turbines at the facility, which is being developed along the Red Sea coast.
Gamesa is expected to start supply of the turbines at the 220MW facility from September this year.
The Gulf of El Zayt wind project is expected to start commercial operations during the second half of 2017, which is in line with the African Country’s 2020 target to fulfil 20% of its power demands from renewable sources.
Gamesa Europe & RoW CEO Ricardo Chocarro said: "The fact that Gamesa was selected for this project, for which all the major global OEMs bid, evidences yet again our products’ tremendous competitiveness."
