Enel Green Power (EGP) has commenced construction on its first wind farm in Zacatecas, Mexico, called Vientos del Altiplano.

Vientos del Altiplano wind farm will have an installed power generation capacity of 100MW and will be built in the municipalities of Mazapil and Villa de Cos.

EGP will invest $220m for the construction of Vientos del Altiplano which will be funded through EGP Group resources.

In May, the company said that it aims to boost its capacity by 7.1 GW by 2019, and is planning to invest around $5.17bn in Latin American projects, particularly in Brazil, Chile and Mexico.

The project will feature 50 turbines with each having capacity of 2MW.

After completion, the project will have power generate more than 280GWh of renewable power each year, which is equivalent to the energy consumed by over 161,000 households in the region.

The project will also help reduce CO2 emission of more than 157,000 tonnes annually.

Enel Green has already signed power purchase agreement (PPAs) for the power generated by the plants.

Presently in Mexico, the company has installed capacity of around 400MW out of which 346MW is derived from wind power and 53MW from hydro power projects.
