Renewable energy firm Enel Green Power has commissioned the 99MW Taltal wind farm in Chile, by connecting it to the grid.

The wind farm, located in the Taltal district of the region of Antofagasta, features 33 units of 3MW turbines that will generate an estimated 300GWh of energy annually.

The clean energy generated at the wind farm will be enough to power about 170,000 households in the country, while reducing more than 200,000 tonnes of CO2 emissions.

Chile’s Central Region Transmission Network will buy the electricity generated by the wind farm under a 20-year power purchase agreement.

Enel Green Power secured the public-land-use concession for the Taltal wind farm in 2012 via the first Chilean public tender.

The tender intended to encourage the expansion of the Chilean energy mix by promoting renewable energy to reduce carbon emissions and the country’s reliance on foreign energy.
