wind farm

Jordan Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) has selected Elecnor to construct 66MW wind farm in the Jordanian city of Maan.

The €83m contract includes the engineering, supply and construction of a wind farm with 33 2MW wind turbines and 78m metal towers.

Elecnor will also operate and maintain the farm for two years in addition to constructing the control building and access roads.

Scheduled to come on stream at the start of 2016, the wind farm will be located on a plot adjacent to the University Al-Hussein, around 7km north-east of the city of Maan in southern Jordan.

The Maan wind farm will be financed with a subsidy from the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development and is the second wind power project promoted by Jordan.

The project is part of the Jordanian government’s strategy to diversify energy sources while seeking ways to generate clean and safe energy.

Currently, the country imports 96% of its energy in the form of oil and gas.

As part of the MEMR’s energy plan, renewable energies would account for 10% of energy distribution in 2020, with approximately 1,200MW of wind power and 600MW of solar energy.

In wind power, Elecnor promotes, invests in and manages its own projects through its specialist subsidiary Enerfín as well as constructs facilities for third parties.
