Australia based engineering and infrastructure management services provider Downer Group has received a contract to work on the proposed Ararat Wind Farm Project in Victoria.

The $130m contract includes construction of a 33 kV transmission network, erection of the wind turbine generators, balance of plant, civil and electrical infrastructure, as well as provision of logistics services.

The farm will be built about 180km northwest of Melbourne and will feature 75 turbines, with expected rated capacity of up to 3.4MW each.

Once fully operational, the farm is expected to produce enough electricity to power up to 123,000 average Victorian households per annum.

Ararat Rural City Council, Northern Grampians Shire Council area and to the Pyrenees Shire Council are expected to gain significant environmental, social and economic benefits from the farm.

However, the project is still subject to financial approval and certain conditions.

According to Downer, the construction of the Ararat Wind Farm is expected to start after financial close has been achieved.

Downer has already completed Collgar Wind Farm in Western Australia, Boco Rock Wind Farm in New South Wales, Lake Bonney Wind Farm in South Australia, and Waubra and Mt Mercer Wind Farms in Victoria.

The company is currently constructing Taralga Wind Farm in New South Wales.
