Denmark-based Dong Energy has acquired the Borkum Riffgrund West 2 offshore wind project in Germany from Energiekontor.

The offshore wind farm, located near Dong Energy’s 312MW Borkum Riffgrund West 1 project, will feature 43 turbines that will generate about 215MW of energy.

Construction on the project will begin after 2020, following an approval for grid connection and a final investment decision from the developer.

An application for a grid link is anticipated to be submitted in 2017 or 2018.

Dong Energy Wind Power executive vice president Samuel Leupold said: "With the Borkum Riffgrund West 2 project we are now strengthening our post 2020 pipeline.

"Having our other offshore wind project, Borkum Riffgrund West 1 right next to it, there are a number of synergies for the development, construction and operation of this project."

Additionally, construction on Dong Energy’s three offshore wind farms in the German North Sea is currently underway which have a combined capacity of about 900MW.

Apart from Borkum Riffgrund 1, Dong Energy is building the 582MW Gode Wind 1 and 2 in Germany.

Germany is planning to install 15GW of offshore wind by 2030 as part of its transition to a renewable electricity supply.

Dong Energy has to date built 2.5GW of offshore wind with plans for 6.5GW more by 2020.
