French company Alstom has won a €50m contract from China National Electric Engineering (CNEEC) for the supply of electro-mechanical equipment for Nigeria’s Zungeru Hydropower Project.
The Zungeru Hydropower Project is being built on the upper reaches of River Kaduna.
Upon completion it will have a power generation capacity of 700MW , becoming the largest hydropower project of the country.
Federal Ministry of Power and Steel of Nigeria own the project, and Sinohydro-CNEEC JV is the general engineering, procurement and construction contractor of the project.
The project is expected to be beneficial to the local flood protection, irrigation and shipping sector, and boost region’s social and economic growth.
Under the contract, Alstom will be responsible for providing four 175 MW Francis turbine-generator sets, along with other related equipment for this project.

By GlobalDataThe company’s Chinese division Alstom Hydro China (AHC) will design and manufacture the equipments, and it will provide supervision to the installation, along with commission and test the projects.
Alstom senior vice president Yves Rannou said: "Zungeru is one of several hydro projects that are part of Nigeria’s Renewable Energy Master Plan.
"Winning this project is another fruitful result from a strong and long-term cooperation with our Chinese partners.
"It further consolidates Alstom’s leading position in Africa’s hydropower market and paves the way to further successes. Finally, we are proud to contribute to the economic growth in this region."
