ADS-TEC Energy has announced progress on its large-scale battery energy storage project at the Pulverdingen substation in Germany, reporting that the permitting authority has confirmed all application documents are complete.
The clean energy company expects the building permit to be granted soon for the facility, which is planned to deliver a power output of approximately 1GW with a storage capacity of 4GW-hours (GWh).

If constructed as planned, it would become one of the largest battery energy storage systems (BESS) in Europe, stated the company.
According to ADS-TEC Energy, the installation could deliver power equivalent to that generated by a major coal or nuclear plant, or roughly 250 wind turbines, for about four hours.
This output is estimated to meet the daily electricity needs of 400,000 single-family households or 800,000 flats.
The investment in such a project typically ranges up to €1bn ($1.1bn).
Looking ahead to 2029, the company indicated the site may become a significant long-term asset through its in-house battery management technology, ongoing technical services, and a continuing stake in the project company.
ADS-TEC Energy founder and CEO Thomas Speidel said: “A project of this size requires staying power. I am proud that we can build in Markgröningen, and above all of our team, which has spent years preparing this project.
“With our own technology and renowned European partners, we are demonstrating that Europe can plan, build and operate critical energy infrastructure on this scale on its own.”
The facility will use ADS-TEC Energy’s proprietary battery management systems and will be developed with European partners, including German suppliers of batteries, switchgear, and transformers.
The company has highlighted the system’s role in storing renewable energy and stabilising the grid, as well as its potential to ease pressure from variable wind and solar output.
Negotiations with potential investors and strategic partners are ongoing.
ADS-TEC Energy plans to sell a majority stake while remaining involved in the project over the long term.
The building permit is described as a key step towards concluding financing and partnership agreements.
