According to Sembcorp, the development will be located at Linggiu Reservoir in Johor, Malaysia.

The site is planned to house an estimated 2.2GWp floating solar photovoltaic (PV) system, paired with battery energy storage system (BESS) of up to 4.3GWh.

Sembcorp will undertake the development in partnership with KPRJ Environment (a subsidiary of Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor) and Qua Energy.

Operations are scheduled to begin in 2029, subject to necessary regulatory approvals and development progress.

The electricity generated is expected to serve demand in both Malaysia and Singapore.

The project is designed to use current and planned subsea interconnections between the two countries to facilitate cross-border electricity trade and enhance regional power connectivity.

Sembcorp Singapore CEO and Gas and Related Services president & CEO Koh Chiap Khiong said: “This project strengthens Sembcorp’s diversified energy portfolio, reinforcing our ability to provide reliable and low-carbon energy solutions to support growing demand from data centres, AI-related industries and other energy-intensive sectors.

“It also demonstrates how regional collaboration can enhance energy security, enable cross-border power trade and support decarbonisation. We look forward to working with our partners to bring it to fruition.”

Sembcorp and its project partners have indicated their intention to continue liaising with authorities and stakeholders in both countries to advance development studies and comply with regulatory requirements.

Sembcorp Industries manages an energy portfolio totalling 35.4GW, of which 21.9GW comprises gross renewable energy capacity across 12 countries.

In June 2026, Sembcorp Industries completed the acquisition of Australian energy generation firm Alinta Energy for A$6.5bn ($4.32bn).
