Japan-based turbine generator supplier Fuji Electric will invest $10m to finance the construction of a new 49MW Hudson Ranch II geothermal plant in California, US.

The plant is owned and operated by EnergySource, an independent renewable energy generation company.

EnergySource president and chief executive officer Dave Watson said, "Fuji Electric’s investment in our project will accelerate our timeline and our larger development plans to bring new capacity to California and Southwestern utilities in order to meet their state-mandated renewable energy requirements through the delivery of geothermal power."

The project located in Imperial Valley will generate energy from the Salton Sea resource, the largest and highest temperature geothermal resources in North America, company said.

EnergySource also recently completed Hudson Ranch I project which was equipped with Fuji Electric steam turbine generator equipment.

Fuji Electric will also supply steam turbine generator equipment for the Hudson Ranch II geothermal plant.

Hudson Ranch I and Hudson Ranch II will both produce enough energy to meet the power needs of 50,000 homes in the Southwestern region.

EnergySource is planning to begin drilling for the geothermal plant by the second quarter of the year and construction will begin in 2013 with commercial operation slated in 2015.
