Suzlon Group, a wind energy developer based in India, has concluded installation of turbines at the 325MW Thornton Bank offshore wind farm in Belgium through its subsidiary REpower Systems SE.

The project is owned by the Belgian offshore project development company C-Power, comprising four Belgian investors including RWE Innogy and EDF EN.

REpower Systems installed 48 REpower 6M turbines for the project in association with ABB and THV Seawind, a consortium between DEME and Fabricom.

Commenting on the project, REpower Systems SE CEO Andreas Nauen said the company is proud to have installed the largest fleet of 6MW turbines across the industry.

"Thornton Bank confirms the long-term potential of the market. We offer our customers the best technology combined with industry leading experience in building projects in complex and challenging environments," added Nauen.

The 2013 construction phase included installation of 18 REpower 6M turbines, each of which had rated power of 6.15MW.

REpower has concluded the third phase work within the scheduled time period, validating the company’s logistics concept and the cooperation between the teams during the installation of the turbines.

With the conclusion of all three construction phases, the Thornton bank wind farm is estimated to have a total output of 325MW and will cater to power requirements of 600.000 people.

In terms of investment volume, the contract marks the largest financing for a completed project to date in the offshore wind industry overall, the company added in the statement.

Thornton Bank offshore wind project was facilitated by companies based in Belgium, Germany, France, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden making the wind farm a showcase project for the European offshore wind industry.
