wind turbines

Iberdrola Ingeniería has received a €85m turnkey contract to manage engineering, procurement, construction and commissioning of the Kinangop wind farm in Nairobi, Kenya.

Developed by Aeolus Kenya, the 61 megawatts (MW) farm is scheduled to be owned by the Macquarie and Old Mutual sponsored African Infrastructure Investment Fund II and the Norwegian Investment fund for developing countries, NORFUND.

The South African Standard Bank will serve as mandated lead arranger for the deal.

Comprising 38 General Electric-built wind turbines, with each 80-meter turbine having 1.6 MW unit capacity, and a rotor diameter spanning 82.5 metres, the Kinangop wind farm is expected to strengthen the company’s presence in Africa and particularly in Kenya.Considering Kenya as a priority country, Iberdrola Ingeniería is currently executing two additional renewable energy and grid projects, having a combined value of more than € 65m.

As part of a consortium with Gamesa, the company is constructing the 13.6 MW Ngong II wind farm in a town 30km from Nairobi, known as Ngong Hills.

Under a separate contract, Iberdrola is also building Nairobi Ring project, a large-scale grid upgrade scheme for Kenya Electricity Transmission (Ketraco), covering the complete upgrade of the Nairobi’s electrical infrastructure through a comprehensive plan to update the distribution grid.
