ABB has secured $55m deal from public utilities in India to construct new transmission and distribution substations, which would boost power supplies in the region.
The contract has been given secured from Bihar Grid Corporation Limited (BGCL) and West Bengal State Electricity Transmission Company Limited (WBSETCL).
The two eastern states of Bihar and West Bengal regularly face power shortages, while demand is rising driven by mining, agriculture and increasing urbanization.
ABB, as part of a turnkey contract in Bihar, will design, supply, install and commission 220/132/33 kV (kilovolt) gas-insulated switchgear (GIS) substations across four locations.
These substations will deploy the firm’s compact high-voltage GIS technology, which can cut down the substation footprint by up to 70% as against conventional air-insulated switchgear (AIS) substations.
ABB will also supply other equipment which comprises medium-voltage switchgear, IEC 61850-compliant protection and substation automation systems, in addition to fiber-optic telecommunications systems.
