HP has entered into a power purchase agreement (PPA) for buying 112MW of wind power generated by a Texan farm owned by SunEdison.

Under the 12 year PPA, HP will buy the energy generated by the South Plains II wind farm to power its Texas-based data centre operations.

The energy purchased by HP will be equal to the power consumed by 42,600 homes each year. The wind farm, when completed, will be capable of generating 300 MW of power, and it is expected to create 400 local construction jobs and up to 15 permanent jobs.

HP has set a goal to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from its operations by 20% of 2010 levels by 2020, and the agreement will help the company meet its target five years ahead of schedule.

HP Corporate Affairs vice president Gabi Zedlmayer said: "This agreement represents the latest step we are taking on HP’s journey to reduce our carbon footprint across our entire value chain, while creating a stronger, more resilient company and a sustainable world."

SunEdison EMEA executive vice president Paul Gaynor added: "It’s an important milestone in driving HP Living Progress as we work to create a better future for everyone through our actions and innovations."
