Cochin International airport (CIAL) in India will become the first solar powered airport in India, which will generate its electricity requirement through PV panels installed across 45 acres area near cargo complex.

CIAL is expected to set up 12MWp solar PV plant as part of its green initiatives, and the project will be implemented by Bosch.

The project components include 265Wp PV modules manufactured by Renesola, and Inverters of 1MW capacity made by ABB India.

Once the work is complete, the PV plant is expected to generate around 48000 units per day, which is expected to meet the power requirement of the airport.

The work for the project will come into operation later this month.

In 2013, the airport installed 100 kWp solar PV Plant on the rooftop of the Arrival Terminal Block with capacity of 250Wp, later it implemented 1 MWp solar PV power plant partly on the roof top and partly on the ground in the Aircraft Maintenance Hangar facility.
