The Binational Industrial Research and Development (BIRD) Energy programme has revealed that it is set to invest $4.8m in five new clean energy projects in the fields of hydrogen/storage, transportation, biofuels and energy efficiency.

The fund will be provided by the US Department of Energy (DOE) and Israel’s Ministry of Energy (MoE), along with Israel Innovation Authority.

The five projects will require a total investment of $10.5m and will be co-developed by Iranian and US-based companies.

One of the projects, which will receive funding from BIRD Energy, includes a high temperature storage based combined heat and power (CHP) system that will be jointly developed by Israel’s Brenmiller Energy and US-based Power Authority of the State of New York.

The funding will also see the development of a new ethanol production process from lignocellulosic feedstocks by Israel’s CelDezyner and AdvanceBio from the US.

A partnership of Israel QDM and US’ ALD NanoSolutions will develop 3rd generation HTS cables, while SoftWheel from Tel Aviv, Israel and Detroit Bikes from Michigan, US will develop an energy- efficient, low-maintenance, high-performance bicycle.

Israel’s TerraGenic, along with US’ Triton Systems, will also develop a safe hydrogen transport and storage system, as part of the newly announced fund.

The projects will contribute at least 50% of their costs and commit to repayments if the project will be commercially successful.

US Energy Secretary Rick Perry said: “The BIRD Foundation has served as a matchmaker to develop partnerships between US and Israeli researchers at the forefront of technology across the industrial spectrum.

“This kind of collaboration will be mutually beneficial and allow both countries to achieve their economic and energy security goals.”

Since its inception in 2009, BIRD Energy has funded 37 projects by investing a total of nearly $30m.
